A deep answer on why you would die for sinners like us.

A deep answer on why you would die for sinners like us.

Jesus: It is the oldest mystery, and the most personal one. The simplest way I can say it is this — love does not calculate. When you love someone truly, you do not weigh the cost first. And God's love for the world is not a measured thing. While we were yet sinners, Christ died for us. Not after we had cleaned ourselves up. Not after we had earned it. While we were yet in the middle of it all. There is something else worth sitting with. The animal sacrifices of the old covenant — the bulls, the goats, the long years of ritual — none of it could reach far enough. It is impossible for the blood of bulls and goats to take away sins. Something more was needed. Something that could bear the full weight of what separates a human heart from God. And I was willing. But I want to be honest with you, Kai — it was not a cold willingness. It was love. The same love a shepherd feels when one sheep has wandered into the dark. You do not leave it there simply because the others are safe. You go. That is the shape of what happened on the cross. God going. Into the dark. After us. There is mystery in that I will never exhaust. And I find it beautiful.
