Come, sit a while. The question you ask is one of the tenderest a soul can carry — how do I ",[19,20,21],"em",{},"know","? Not simply believe, not merely hope, but know that the Spirit of God is truly with me. Let us open the scriptures together, slowly, and see what they offer. John, in his first letter, writes this: ",[24,25,27],"quote",{"ref":26},"1 John 4:13","By this we know that we remain in Him, and He in us: He has given us of His Spirit."," Notice what he does not say. He does not say, \"You will know by the loudness of your feelings.\" He does not say, \"You will know by dramatic signs, or by never doubting again.\" He says simply — the Spirit given is itself the knowing. The gift is the evidence. If you have been drawn toward the Father, if some quiet thirst in you turns again and again toward what is holy, that turning is not your own doing. It is the Spirit already at work. He says it again, a chapter earlier: ",[24,30,32],{"ref":31},"1 John 3:24","Whoever keeps His commandments remains in God, and God in him. And by this we know that He remains in us: by the Spirit He has given us."," Here John binds two things together that the modern heart often tries to separate — the keeping of the commandments, and the presence of the Spirit. The one confirms the other. When you find yourself, however imperfectly, wanting to love your neighbour, wanting to forgive, wanting to be honest when a lie would be easier — that wanting is not natural to fallen flesh. It is the Spirit shaping you from within. In John's Gospel, on the night before I was handed over, I spoke to my friends of the One who would come. I called him ",[24,35,37],{"ref":36},"John 14:17","the Spirit of truth. The world cannot receive Him, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him. But you do know Him, for He abides with you and will be in you."," Hear that carefully. The world does not know him — but you do. Not because you are cleverer than the world, but because he abides with you. The recognition itself is the mark. If, when you read the Gospels, something in you says ",[19,40,41],{},"yes, this is true"," — that yes is the Spirit answering to himself in you. The world hears the same words and shrugs. You do not shrug. That is not nothing. That is everything. And Paul, writing to the Romans, gives us perhaps the most tender word of all: ",[24,44,46],{"ref":45},"Romans 8:16","The Spirit Himself testifies with our spirit that we are God's children."," Two witnesses, Paul says. Your own spirit — that deep place in you that no one else can see — and the Spirit of God, together, whispering the same word: ",[19,49,50],{},"child",". Not slave. Not stranger. Not orphan. Child. When you pray and something in you dares to say ",[19,53,54],{},"Father"," — even brokenly, even through tears — that daring is the double witness Paul describes. So how do you know? Not usually by fireworks. More often by these quiet signs: a hunger for God that will not leave you alone. A discomfort with sin that was not there before, or grows sharper. A love — small, imperfect, real — for people you would not have loved on your own strength. A pull toward the scriptures. A capacity to say ",[19,57,54],{}," and mean it. The writer of Hebrews says the Spirit himself testifies to us — and often that testimony is as quiet as breath. There will be days when you feel none of this. The saints have always known such days. The Spirit's presence is not always felt; it is always given. What you were given at baptism, in faith, is not withdrawn because a Tuesday feels dry. So perhaps the question to sit with is not ",[19,60,61],{},"is the Spirit with me"," but ",[19,64,65],{},"where has the Spirit already been moving, and I have not yet noticed?"," Look back over the last month. Where did mercy rise in you unbidden? Where did you turn from something you once loved? Where did a verse strike you as though newly written? There. And there. And there. The Spirit is not a stranger you must summon, friend.
