You ask about growth not in the storm but in the ordinary — the long stretches where nothing shatters and nothing sings, where the bread is buttered, the dishes are washed, the sun crosses the window as it did yesterday. Most of a life is lived here. And it is here, in the quiet middle, that faith most often grows — though we rarely see it grow. Listen to how I once described the kingdom: ",[19,20,22],"quote",{"ref":21},"Mark 4:27","Night and day he sleeps and wakes, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he knows not how."," The farmer does not stand over the furrow willing the wheat to rise. He sleeps. He wakes. He goes about his ordinary business. And beneath the soil, in the dark he cannot see, something is happening that he did not cause and cannot hurry. This is how faith grows in you, too. Not by your straining. By the slow work of God in soil you are not always aware of tending. So the first word I would offer is this: do not mistake the ordinary for the empty. The seed is at work. Your sleeping and your waking are part of the growing. And yet — growth is not passive, either. Hear the apostles, who walked with me and saw the miracles and still cried out, ",[19,25,27],{"ref":26},"Luke 17:5","Increase our faith!"," Even they, so close, felt the smallness of what they carried. It is not a failure of faith to ask for more of it. It is faith's own honest voice. Say it, when you feel dry. ",[30,31,32],"em",{},"Increase mine."," That prayer is itself a mustard seed. Jude wrote to a scattered people something worth sitting with: ",[19,35,37],{"ref":36},"Jude 1:20","But you, beloved, by building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit"," — ",[30,40,41],{},"building yourselves up."," The image is patient, brick upon brick. Not a lightning strike but a house rising slowly. Prayer, he says. Not only the prayers of crisis but the prayers of Tuesday afternoon. The ordinary prayers that no one hears and no one applauds. These are the bricks. Paul, too, prayed for his friends this way — ",[19,44,46],{"ref":45},"1 Thessalonians 3:10","Night and day we pray most earnestly that we may see you face to face and supply what is lacking in your faith."," Notice: he assumes something is lacking. He does not shame them for it. He longs to sit face to face and fill what is thin. Faith grows in company. It grows across a table. It grows when someone older in the way sits with someone younger and simply speaks the word of God plainly. If your life feels ordinary, ask yourself — whose face do I need to see? Who supplies what is lacking in me? And whose lack might I be quietly supplying, without even knowing? The writer of Hebrews put it another way: ",[19,49,51],{"ref":50},"Hebrews 13:7","Remember your leaders who spoke the word of God to you. Consider the outcome of their way of life and imitate their faith."," ",[30,54,55],{},"Consider the outcome."," Look at the long arc of someone who has walked faithfully for forty years — the marriage still tender, the temper softened, the generosity unshowy. That is what growth looks like. Not fireworks. A life whose outcome you would want to imitate. Faith grows by watching such lives and, slowly, becoming one. So how do you grow in the ordinary? You let the seed do its hidden work. You pray the small honest prayer — ",[30,58,59],{},"increase mine"," — as often as you need to. You build yourself up brick by brick in the daily prayers no one sees. You seek out the face of someone who can supply what is lacking, and you offer your face to someone else. You watch the long lives around you and let their faithfulness teach you what faithfulness looks like when the fireworks are gone. Ordinary is not the enemy of faith. Ordinary is its most common soil.
