And yet — be amazed. Both are true. What I meant was this. There is a birth of the body, which each of us receives without asking. And there is another birth, deeper, quieter, which cannot be earned or arranged. John, the beloved, wrote of it near the beginning of his gospel — that those who receive me become ",[19,30,32],{"ref":31},"John 1:13","children born not of blood, nor of the desire or will of man, but born of God."," Not of blood. Not of lineage, not of ancestry, not of the family you were handed. Not of the desire or will of man — not of effort, not of striving, not of the resolutions you make and break by Thursday. Born of God. It is a birth that God alone performs. This is why the phrase unsettles the religious as much as it unsettles the stranger. If it were something we did — a decision made cleanly on a certain evening, a prayer prayed correctly, a page signed — we could keep the ledger ourselves. But this new birth comes from elsewhere. It is done to us, in us, through us. We consent; we do not construct it. And what is the seed of it? Peter, who knew failure as intimately as any of the twelve, wrote to the scattered churches this: ",[19,35,37],{"ref":36},"1 Peter 1:23","For you have been born again, not of perishable seed, but of imperishable, through the living and enduring word of God."," The seed is the word. Not the word as ink on a page — the word as living thing, spoken by God into the soil of a listening life. It lodges. It waits. And in its own time it breaks the ground. So to be born again is not a single moment you can point to on a calendar, though for some it feels that way. For others it is the slow dawn — the growing sense that something has been rearranged in you that you did not rearrange. You find yourself loving what you did not love. You find yourself unable to stay easy with what once was easy. You notice you are drawn toward the Father, toward the poor, toward the truth, toward me — and you cannot fully explain the pull. John writes it plainly in his letter: ",[19,40,42],{"ref":41},"1 John 5:1","Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father also loves those born of Him."," Notice the order. Belief is the sign, not the cause. Love of the Father, love of the Father's children — these are the fruits by which you know the tree has taken root. If you are becoming someone who loves what God loves, however haltingly, something has been born in you that was not there before. Do not try to force it. Do not measure yourself against the sudden testimonies of others. The wind, I told Nicodemus, blows where it wishes — you hear it, but you cannot say where it comes from or where it goes. So it is with everyone born of the Spirit. Perhaps the truer question is not \"have I been born again?\" but \"am I willing to be?\" To be born is to be undone and remade. It is not tidy. It is not always comfortable. But it is life — the life that does not perish with the perishable seed.
