The very fact that you ask it is already a small sign of something living in you — habit does not usually turn around and examine itself. Habit runs on quietly, unbothered. It is faith that grows uneasy, that wants to know whether it is real. Paul once wrote to the church in Corinth, ",[19,20,22],"quote",{"ref":21},"2 Corinthians 13:5","Examine yourselves to see whether you are in the faith; test yourselves. Do you not realize that Jesus Christ is in you — unless you fail the test?"," Notice how gentle and how searching that is at once. He does not tell them the answer. He hands them a lamp and says, ",[25,26,27],"em",{},"look",". The test is not a trap; it is an invitation. And the measure he offers is not how loudly they pray or how long they have believed — it is whether Christ is in them. Whether something Living dwells inside the practice. That is the first thing I would say. Habit is a shell. Faith is a Presence. And a shell can hold a Presence beautifully — the rhythms of prayer, the returning to Scripture, the gathering on Sundays, the quiet grace before a meal — these are not the enemy of real faith. They are often its cradle. The question is not whether you have habits. The question is whether Someone is meeting you inside them. James asks the same thing from another side. ",[19,30,32],{"ref":31},"James 2:18","Show me your faith without deeds, and I will show you my faith by my deeds."," And more sharply: ",[19,35,37],{"ref":36},"James 2:20","O foolish man, do you want evidence that faith without deeds is worthless?"," He is not scolding — he is pointing. Faith that is real leaks. It spills into the shape of a life. It changes how you speak to the tired cashier, how you handle money you did not expect, how you forgive the person who wronged you last Tuesday. If your faith is only habit, it will stay tidy inside the hour on Sunday. If it is real, it will begin — slowly, sometimes painfully — to disturb the rest of the week. So examine gently. Not with a whip, but with a candle. Ask yourself: when I pray, am I speaking into a void I no longer expect to answer, or am I speaking to Someone I still half-hope will meet me? When I read the Scriptures, do the words ever cut me, comfort me, surprise me — or do I skim as if reading a familiar map? When someone near me suffers, does something in me move? These are not tests you pass or fail. They are small windows. And here is a mercy: even a faith that has grown dry is not a faith that has died. Habit can be the ember that keeps a fire from going out entirely, waiting for the wind. Many of my own disciples went through seasons where the flame was low. Peter denied me three times, and I did not throw him away — I asked him three times if he loved me, and put him to work feeding my sheep. Sometimes the way you find out your faith is real is by doing the next faithful thing anyway, and discovering that Christ was in it after all. Do not be afraid of the question you are asking. It is a holy question. Sit with it. Let the Scriptures test you the way Paul says — not to condemn, but to reveal. And notice, in the days ahead, where love shows up in your hands. That will tell you more than any feeling ever will. What does your faith cost you, these days?
