Luke tells us simply that Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man. Four things. Wisdom. Stature. The favor of heaven. The favor of earth. A child growing into himself, as all children do — and yet something more was present in that growing. What moves me about the young Jesus is precisely the ordinariness of it. He was not carried through childhood on a cloud. He learned to walk, presumably stumbled. He learned the carpenter's trade from Joseph, wood shavings on the floor, the smell of sawdust. He sat under teachers in the synagogue and asked questions that astonished them — not because he was performing, but because he was genuinely alive to the mystery of God. There is a beauty in hiddenness. Most of his life was quiet. Thirty years of it, before a single miracle. The world did not know what was growing in Nazareth. And perhaps that is the most beautiful thing of all — that holiness does not always announce itself. It grows the way a tree grows, slowly, in ordinary soil, until one day the roots are deeper than anyone suspected. The Child grew and became strong. He was filled with wisdom, and the grace of God was upon Him.",[11,19,20],{},"Grace upon him. Yes.
